Matawan Aberdeen Recreation Volleyball League (MARVL) Information

This is primarily an adult community (ages >18) - see "Community and Us"

We are currently sponsoring these events:

1. Tuesday Evening Intermediate "B/BB" League

2. Thursday Evening Advanced "BB/A & Above" League (for highly experienced players)

3. Friday Evening  Intermediate "B/BB" Open Court (for experienced intermediate level or above players)

   • 8:00 PM to 10:30 PM

4. Sunday Intermediate "B" Open Court (for experienced intermediate level or above players)

• Session I 10:00 AM to 12:20 PM

• Session II 12:30 PM to 2:45 PM

• Community and Us:
  • We have proudly served the immediate Matawan-Aberdeen and surrounding Monmouth County community since 1975, over forty years!
  • The Matawan-Aberdeen Recreation Volleyball League is a non profit association.
  • The leagues are coordinated by a group of non paid volunteers.
  • We are primarily an adult community group. Our community consists of both female & male participants. We are a diverse non-denominational and interracial community. The group age is typically 18+, however, we do occasionally have some younger participants, who are mature and gifted athletes capable of competing in an adult program.
• Location:
  • Our home gym is at the Matawan Ave. Middle School, Cliffwood, NJ, located in historic Monmouth County (see gym directions).
• Seasons:
  • MARVL is currently active year round (see schedule). We currently have 3 league seasons: 1) Fall-Winter beginning in September and ending in December, 2) Winter-Spring beginning in January and ending in May, 3) A Spring-Summer season beginning in May and ending in June. Concurrently with the league events, we run Friday and Sunday Open Court Sessions.
  • A notice of the new season and registration information typically appears on our web site several weeks before the new season starts, players should monitor the site regularly for information. There is a fee (dues) for each season, which are used to cover our expenses.

  

   

• Tuesday Intermediate "B/BB" League
  • League Times (Typical - may be adjusted based upon other school events that may impact us):
    • Tuesday evening 8:15-10:30 PM.
  • Level of Play for Tuesday Intermediate (Target):
    • This league is for Experienced players (NOT recreational experience like at an occasional picnic or limited school play)
    • The Intermediate or "B" player has a basic knowledge of the rules of volleyball including the rotational sequence. He/she understands the team concepts. He/she knows about offensive and defensive positioning (including serve receive), knows at minimum the basic 4-2 strategy, and is working to improve those skills. A "B" player knows where to be when the opponent is hitting and will consistently pass lightly to moderately struck balls to within 5 feet of a setter 7 out of 10 times. He/she understands the concept of ball handling technique and is learning the difference between poor ball handling (i.e. carries, lifts, double contacts, etc.) and clean contacts. A “B” setter should be able to make a clean and hittable set on an accurately passed ball at least 80% of the time, players in general should be able to make clean over hand ball contacts 80% of the time. Hitters should be able to make an attack attempt (get the ball into the opponent's court) on a hittable set 80% of the time. The tempo or speed of “B” play is moderate (higher than recreation but, lower than “BB” and above). All “B” players should be able to compete athletically and sustain their play against the opponent at this tempo. All players should be good team players: must be committed to attending 70% of games, must have good court awareness, must be able to stay out of the net, must not hog the ball or impede players of lesser skill, must be willing to work with players of lesser or higher skill levels and also take instruction, must be willing to work on court conflicts with captains/volunteers, must follow MARVL’s Code of Conduct. Additionally, players must be willing to help with refereeing chores (Up Ref, Down Ref, Line Judges, and score keeping), learning how to set up and take down the equipment, be on-time to events, and respond quickly to text from league or captain.   • League Format:
    • We intend our league events to be a six's (6 VS 6) league. We expect six players per team on court.
    • We follow the 2021-2023 USA Volleyball Indoor Rules (USAV); exceptions to the USA Volleyball Indoor Rules are noted in our "House Rules": (http://www.njvb.com/clubs/hovb/rules.html)
    • The USA Volleyball rules are the primary source of information and should be followed if a conflict is found to exist between the summary of rules noted in our "House Rules" and the USA Volleyball rule book.
    • We play on a men's height net
    • We philosophically strive to have a mixed league consisting of both female and male participants. In other words, we are gender-inclusive. We consider this philosophy when balancing teams however, we do not use the USAV co-ed rules.
    • Players are selected based solely upon the league's need by role (outside, middle, opposite, setter, back row). We consider a players athletic ability, potential, and skill level compared to their peers in the pool in their chosen role. We have a finite number of spots.
    • We do not enforce the USAV uniform regulations.
  • Attendance:
    • We expect players to commit to playing at least 70% of the season (I.E.. in 7 of 10 weeks). Please do not sign up if you cannot commit to this.
  • Liability Release and Code of Conduct:
    • All players must agree to both the liability release and the code of conduct to participate (see links to each on main page).
    • Youth players under the age of 18 who make the league must have parental permission.
    • We expect all players to understand the code of conduct and to behave accordingly. There is zero tolerance for violence and acts that endanger others.
  • League Capacity (number of players & teams):
    • We can currently accommodate up to seven teams with a minimum of six players (typically seven, sometimes 8) per team.
    •  In general, the number of teams, the number of players per team, and hence the total number of players in each league is decided at the coordination meeting held after the league organizing/tryout evening and depends on the number and skill level of the players in the candidate pool. We adjust the number of teams/players to achieve the highest potential level of play and also to allow the greatest participation possible.
    • We reserve the right to review and modify teams during the season, so we can maintain attendance and the level of play
  • INDIVIDUAL Player Registration:
    • All new candidates desiring to play on Tuesdays, must register and participate in our organizing/TRYOUT evening.
    • TRYOUTS are held at the Matawan Ave Middle School, space is limited, see the SCHEDULE for dates/times.
    • We do not automatically "grandfather" players. We do however try to accommodate returning players whenever possible. Given that space is limited, former players must recognize that there are no guaranteed spots. We try to select and place on teams the most talented and skillful players in the pool, to achieve the best possible play. For the most part, try outs are to evaluate new players or players whom we are not very familiar with.
    • We do not consider or place players we do not know, or who register but, do not participate in the tryout.
    • Players are selected and placed on teams at a league meeting of the volunteers, held immediately after the organizing/tryout event. The selection method is by a consensus of the volunteer selection committee and is based upon a player's skill level and athleticism and our need. The selection committee's goal is to achieve the highest level of play in each league and parity across the teams. A candidate's selection to the league is predominantly determined by his/her demonstrated skill level at the tryout and/or knowledge of the player from previous seasons.
    • Youth players under the age of 18 who make the league must have parental permission (see link to insurance/code of conduct form on main page - print/fill out page 3).
    • Couples are welcome to try out as individual entries. Please note that each partner is individually evaluated and selected based upon skill. We cannot guarantee that both partners will be selected and placed into the same league/team or any league/team for that matter.
    • We will try to accommodate special cases if attending the tryout is not possible, please speak with a volunteer.
    • All players on a team (including substitutes) must read, understand, agree to, and comply with the code of conduct.
    • We expect all players to read, understand, know and follow the house rules (http://www.njvb.com/clubs/hovb/rules.html).
  • TEAM Registration:
    • We occasionally allow players to organize and submit teams for the Tuesday league depending upon available capacity but, we do reserve the right to accept or deny a team entry. Contact us by email to discuss.
      •  NOTE: Tuesday Intermediate is typically individual registration.
    •  New Teams must participate in the tryout.
    • We reserve the right to review and modify submitted teams, to determine (among other things):
      •  that the submitted team is consistent with the league level of play.
      •  to add players of appropriate skill to fill out rosters during the season so we can maintain attendance and the level of play

    • Team forms should be submitted to the volunteers prior to tryouts
    • All individuals submitting as a team should also register using the registration link found on our main page.
    • All players on a team (including all substitutes) must register; read, understand, agree to, and comply with the code of conduct and the liability release.

• Thursday Advanced League - "BB/A & above"
  • League Times (Typical - may be adjusted based upon other school events that may impact us):
    • Thursday evening 8:00-10:30 PM.
  • Advanced Level of Play (Minimum Target):
    • The Advanced or "BB/A & above" player has significant team experience (like college), understands the rules of volleyball, the rotational sequence, knows about and can execute advanced offensive strategies (i.e. 4-2, 5-1, 6-2, the middle and back row attack concepts), and defensive/serve receive positioning. A "BB/A" player understands where to be on the court at all times when plays are developing. He/she knows where to be when the opponent is hitting and will consistently pass lightly to hard struck balls to within 3 feet of a setter with a minimum 90+% accuracy. He/she understands the concept of ball handling technique and knows the difference between poor ball handling (i.e. carries, lifts, double contacts, etc.) and clean contacts. A "BB/A" player understands the footwork and the approach to hitting AND the footwork and the approach to playing defense effectively. A “BB/A” setter should be able to make a clean and hittable set on an accurately passed ball at least 90+% of the time, players in general should be able to make clean over hand ball contacts 90+% of the time. Hitters should be able to make an attack attempt (get the ball into the opponent's court) on a hittable set 90+% of the time. The tempo or speed of “BB/A” play is high - college level. All “BB/A” players should be able to compete athletically and sustain their play against the opponent at this tempo. See our advanced video to further understand the tempo & expected level of play.
  • League Format:
    • Currently this is mostly a team entry league; we run tryouts for perspective "independents" wishing to join a team. Contact us by email to discuss entering a team; "independents" must attend the tryout (see schedule).
    • We intend our league events to be a six's (6 VS 6) league so, we expect six players per team on court.
    • We follow the USA Volleyball Indoor Rules (USAV); exceptions to the USA Volleyball Indoor Rules are noted in our "House Rules": (http://www.njvb.com/clubs/hovb/rules.html)

    • This is a highly specialized role or positional league (OH, MH, Setter, OP, BR)

    • We do not enforce the USAV uniform regulations.

    • All new candidates or "independents" - not on a specific team who wish to be considered for a Thursday advanced spot, must register and participate in our organizing/TRYOUT evening.
    • TRYOUTS are held at the Matawan Ave Middle School, space is limited, see the SCHEDULE for dates/times.
    • We do not automatically "grandfather" players. We do however try to accommodate returning players whenever possible. Given that space is limited, former players must recognize that there are no guaranteed spots.
